United launches first US-Greenland nonstop flight in two decades

A United Airlines-operated Boeing 737 Max 8 landed in Nuuk from Newark International Airport.

The weekend flight is the first direct service between the US and Greenland for nearly 20 years.

Air Greenland previously operated from Baltimore/Washington International Airport to Kangerlussuaq Airport in Greenland in 2007 but scrapped the route soon after due to high operating costs.

United’s new service runs twice weekly from June to September.

Other flight options from the US involve a connection via Iceland.

“United will be the only carrier to connect the US directly to Nuuk — the northernmost capital in the world, providing a gateway to world-class hiking and fascinating wildlife,” the airline said.
