Massive strike at Lufthansa on Friday, April 10

The walkout, organized by the UFO union, is scheduled to run from 12:01 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The strike will impact all Lufthansa departures from Frankfurt and Munich on April 10. At the same time, cabin crew from Lufthansa CityLine are set to walk out at nine German airports, including Hamburg, Bremen, Stuttgart, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Hanover—raising the likelihood of significant flight cancellations across the network.

The industrial action follows a union ballot held in late March, where a strong majority voted in favour of strike measures after negotiations with management broke down.

UFO says Lufthansa has failed to make meaningful progress in talks over improved working conditions for around 19,000 cabin crew, as well as a social plan for approximately 800 CityLine employees affected by the subsidiary’s planned closure. Union leader Joachim Vázquez Bürger blamed the airline for the impasse, citing the lack of a viable offer.

Key union demands include better roster predictability and longer notice periods for dismissals.

Lufthansa has criticized the strike as disproportionate and is urging a return to negotiations. The airline warned that the timing—coinciding with the end of the Easter holiday travel period—will heavily impact passengers returning home.

This is the latest in a series of labour disputes at Lufthansa. Both UFO and the pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit, staged coordinated strikes in mid-February, leading to major cancellations. Pilots also carried out a two-day strike in mid-March, with that labour conflict still unresolved.
