India drops physical boarding pass rule for international flights

The change will apply across all international airports in India and is expected to make the departure process faster and more convenient for passengers.

Travelers will be able to show an electronic boarding pass on a smartphone or other device at immigration counters for clearance. Paper boarding passes will still be accepted, but immigration officers will no longer stamp them.

The move follows concerns over the existing procedure, which required passengers to produce a physical boarding pass and have it stamped during immigration clearance.

Digital boarding passes become the new norm
The Bureau of Immigration has reportedly instructed airport operators, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other aviation stakeholders to ensure staff are familiar with the revised process.

Officials cited passenger inconvenience as one reason for ending the mandatory paper requirement. There have also been instances where boarding passes were incorrectly read because of improper or inaccurate stamping, according to the communication.

India Bureau of Immigration has now decided to eliminate both the mandatory presentation of physical boarding passes and the stamping requirement at immigration counters.

The change reflects India’s broader shift toward digital travel procedures and could be particularly useful for passengers checking in through airline apps or online platforms.

For international visitors and Indian residents departing on overseas trips, the new system means one less piece of paperwork to manage at the airport. But for the ones who still want to stick to paper, here are the good news: the physical boarding pass will not disappear for passengers who prefer or need a paper document. They can still use one for immigration clearance after September 1!
